By Julie DeCoutere and Andrew StonerIn 2017, Douglas Express delivered an estimated 1.1 million items of goods, according to a report from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
In 2019, the company delivered 1.0 million items and in 2020 delivered 1 million items.
But in the first six months of 2021, the bulk of the orders are going to courier services like Douglas Express, which is one of the biggest couriers in the world.
And in the last 12 months of the year, the number of deliveries to courier companies rose by 8.7 per cent.
Douglas Express delivered 3.9 million items in 2021, up from 2.8 million in 2018.
That increase is mainly driven by growth in deliveries to major delivery companies, including British courier firm CAA, which had its best year in 2020, and Australia Post.
But the company’s growing footprint in the courier market is also driving increased demand for its delivery services.
“I think a lot of our business is coming from small businesses and the middle class,” Douglas Express CEO David McBride said.
For instance, Douglas customers in Melbourne and Melbourne suburbs are getting their packages delivered on a more regular basis, McBride added. “
And so our business has become much more diverse and we have to compete against all the delivery services.”

“It’s an important part of our daily life for our customers,” he said.
Douglass Express’ growing delivery footprint in Australia has resulted in more orders coming through to its courier services.
In 2019 Douglas Express reported delivery volumes of $1.4 billion, a jump of $100 million from the year before.
The company’s overall delivery volume rose by $200 million to $1,056 million, an increase of 13 per cent from the previous year.
And the company is expanding its delivery footprint beyond the courier business to more of its customers, like small business owners, small businesses, individuals and retirees.
“We are seeing an increase in the amount of customers that are getting delivery via our courier services,” McBride told Business Insider.
“So the opportunity for us is to provide the right services for them and to have that service in the right location.”
Douglas has been offering courier services to a growing number of businesses since launching in 2013, but its delivery network in Australia is more extensive than in the United States and Europe.
Douglas is also expanding its presence in China, where it is the world’s largest courier service provider.
Doulin is the latest in a long line of courier companies to launch their own delivery service.
The world’s second-largest courier service company, Singapore-based courier company G4S, launched its own courier service in 2019.
And last year the online logistics company Zipcar started offering courier delivery services in a new location in Sydney.
In the United Kingdom, online logistics provider Zipcar launched its courier service last year.
The online logistics giant also operates a courier service for the UK’s National Rail network.
The London-based company, which has a global footprint of 4.2 million employees, has been looking to expand its business beyond the UK for a long time.
But in 2018, Douglas announced that it would shut down its courier business.
McBride believes that the closure of the courier services was a good business decision.
“There are more services out there that are offering that same level of service that we do,” McBridge said.
McBride said that in the coming years, Douglas would be looking to develop new delivery services to compete with other courier services, which he said would be cheaper.
“Douglas was able to scale our business to meet our customers needs in the years that it was in business and that’s what we’re trying to do now,” Mcbridge said.
